04 Jul Taipa Village Cultural Association Presents “Macau’s Firecracker Industry” – New Works by Lio Man Cheong
Taipa Village Cultural Association takes great pleasure in presenting the exhibition “Macau’s Firecracker Industry”, created by renowned master painter Lio Man Cheong. The exhibition showcases Lio’s new and unseen works depicting Macau’s long-flourishing firecracker industry, from its growing prominence in the late 19th century to its prosperity in the early 20th century.
As befits his widespread acclaim, Lio has participated in many fine art activities and collective exhibitions locally and internationally. As a master painter who specialises in watercolours and oils, Lio’s works always dwell on space, time, memory and people.
“The series of works incorporate Lio’s signature technique in watercolour painting, visually narrating the traditional production line of the firecracker industry and the way of life surrounding it,” says João Ó, President of the Executive Board of Taipa Village Cultural Association.
“As master Lio’s visual research shows, the handicraft process consists of 16 phases. Each of these phases is rendered with a precise notion of their context: the humble and precarious settings, young women and children performing tasks with explosive materials to help their families and improve their lives scenes that are nowadays inconceivable and underrated. This exhibition has a special meaning for Taipa Village and its residents, as it is a reenactment of a particular era and phenomenon. It is in fact a reminder of its rich tradition and pays tribute to its ancestors.”
The exhibition theme, which combines with the finely honed technique of master Lio, constitutes an important addition to the diversity of artwork showcased at Taipa Village Art Space. It is a priceless testimony to Macau’s humble past and memory of the prosperous era of Macau’s firecracker industry.
Tapa Village Cultural Association continues to collaborate with local and international talent from a wide range of backgrounds to present a diverse array of artworks in different media at Taipa Village Art Space. These collaborations aim to embrace artistic initiatives to transform Taipa Village into a lively centre for cultural and creative endeavour, and contribute to the sustainable development of non-gaming tourism in Macau.
