16 Oct Newly Renovated Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Copenhagen
Famed Danish architect Arne Jacobsen’s only hotel, the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, is in the final stages of its extensive renewal. The renovation is set for completion in April 2018, with the aim of reviving the icon for the future.
The hotel first opened in 1960 and was designed down to every detail by Arne Jacobsen. He designed the entire hotel, from the facade, to the famed Egg chair and the cutlery – making it one of the most recognizable and cherished examples of Danish modernist architecture and interior design. Now the world-famous icon, today known as Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, has undergone an extensive renovation and is modernized for the future. The entire meeting space, the newly opened Café Royal restaurant, the entire lobby area and almost all of the 261 guest rooms and suites are fully renovated. In April 2018, the hotel will be completely renewed.
“Our aim is to revive the iconic atmosphere by carefully protecting our legacy whilst at the same time modernizing to meet the guests’ expectations”, says Brian Gleeson, General Manager of Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Copenhagen.
The acclaimed Danish design studio Space Copenhagen has orchestrated the renewal, which includes all guest rooms and suites (261 incl. room 606), the newly opened Café Royal restaurant & bar, the lobby and the meeting and events space. Five of the renovated guest rooms, are unique Signature Suites designed by Fritz Hansen.
“We are deeply honored to be a part of this renovation. The hotel is a true landmark for design aficionados around the world. It is a destination. Our intention is to preserve its extraordinary character but we don’t want to turn it into a museum, we want to bring it to life for a new generation,” says Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen, Co-founders of Space Copenhagen.
A mix of original and new design
To fully understand the spirit and intent of Arne Jacobsen’s original scheme, Space Copenhagen dug deep into the hotel’s archives. Through this understanding, they have modernized the hotel’s interiors, whilst carefully preserving the original design.
Throughout the hotel, the new interior layout re-introduces original hotel features and furniture alongside new pieces and elements fit for the modern traveler. All designed to complement the hotel’s existing architecture.
Several of Arne Jacobsen’s most famous furniture pieces were designed for the hotel, like the ‘Egg’ chair and the ‘Swan’ chair. Working closely with Danish brand Fritz Hansen, Space Copenhagen have revitalized some of these existing pieces with new upholstery from Kvadrat / Raf Simon to suit contemporary use. In addition, Space Copenhagen has designed new furniture – the Loafer chair and Amore mirrors for ‘&tradition’ – continuing the legacy of the hotel as a place where guests engage with new and inventive contemporary design.
