Designer Celia Chu of Celia Chu Design & Associates Adds Rosewood Bangkok to Her Design Portfolio

20 Dec Designer Celia Chu of Celia Chu Design & Associates Adds Rosewood Bangkok to Her Design Portfolio

The recent opening of Rosewood Bangkok with interior design undertaken by Celia Chu of Celia Chu Design & Associates (CCDA) introduces a timeless design inspiration which draws upon aspects of Thailand’s rich culture while celebrating the cutting-edge creativity and contemporary design ethos of the dynamic capital city.

Located in the prime business and retail district of Ploenchit, Rosewood Bangkok reflects a remarkable contemporary architectural design. The striking 30-story architectural marvel is inspired by wai, the famous Thai gesture of greeting, as a modern silhouette of Thai spirit. Celia Chu has led this successful design interpretation of Rosewood Bangkok for the interiors with every small detail considered to deliver the most impactful translation of the overall hotel design.

“When designing the concept, we become heavily involved with the culture, and all decisions have to come from the heart. To me, it’s important to first understand what kind of a story you want to tell and how you want the guests to feel.” Celia comments.

Designed to celebrate Rosewood’s hallmark A Sense of Place® philosophy and display the harmonious coexistence of the contemporary and the classical, Celia has defined a strong statement for Rosewood Bangkok’s interior design by integrating sophisticated tones, extraordinary surfaces, a décor of rich materials, soothing neutral colour palettes, wall mouldings and textures. Luxurious materials have been used throughout the design such as marble, metal and leather combing with traditional materials including wood carvings and textiles to establish a multi-layered and visually compelling stage set.

Rosewood Bangkok’s 159 guestrooms, including 34 suites and studios and 3 houses with private pools and terraces, all reflect a contemporary residential look and are designed to infuse a modern interior design sensibility into the indigenous elements. Celia skillfully utilises the colour scheme to incorporate dark and light areas to envision a residential feeling in each distinct area while echoing the overall design of the hotel.

Guest Rooms

All guest rooms are enriched by books, art, accessories and personal touches furthering the relaxing residential feel including the clever use of screens to maximize the use of space. The pervading sense of an urban manor fused with a modern Thai aesthetic is reflected through tropical accents of rich woods and rattan-inspired patterns, weaves and panels, while the colour palette is accentuated by bursts of turquoise blue and emerald green against a calming backdrop of white, cream, brown and luxurious gold tones. The bathroom in each guestroom is elegantly designed with refined ornamentation and pattern piles to resemble a royal ambience of the Grand Palace, celebrating Thai craftsmanship and culture.

Celia has also designed Rosewood Bangkok’s public areas, Sense spa and selected F&B outlets – Lennon’s, Lakorn European Brasserie and G&O, with a distinct sense of intimacy and privacy evident throughout the entire guest journey.

The Pavilion

Artistry is central to Celia’s design aesthetic where she harmoniously blends old-world charm and new rustic applications. The Pavilion at Rosewood Bangkok is a purpose-built, high-end residential-style venue featuring a stunning bespoke metal and glass chandelier and swirl carpet design which reflects the spins and turns of traditional Thai dance. The luxurious interior offers a state-of-the-art concept for event and function spaces with high levels of privacy and exclusivity to create a backdrop for truly memorable celebrations.

Sense Spa

Drawing from the long heritage of Thailand’s healing culture, Celia’s vision for Sense Spa is to draw reference from the caves found in Thailand’s countryside which perfectly complement the authentic Thai experience. The fibre glass walls shaped and painted by a local artist transforms the space and offers a sanctuary of tranquility amidst bustling Bangkok for a journey of rejuvenation, relaxation and the pursuit of well-being.

Sky Lobby

From the moment guests approach the Sky Lobby on the 7th floor, the serene journey begins with a mesmerizing scene. Taking inspiration from the owner’s family history of collecting art, the wall panels are made of glass overlaid with gold leaf exemplifying this notion as Celia explains, “They are the same shape as the roof tiles of the traditional houses from the old town, which I love, but I wanted to transform them in an architectural way so that people would take more notice of them. It also reflected the Rosewood’s philosophy of a sense of place.”

Lakorn European Brasserie

Combining the traditional with an open uninterrupted space creates a timeless presence in the western dining venue Lakorn European Brasserie. Celia makes use of curved panels to create a sense of intimacy in the seating zone where the space has drawn inspiration from an antique musical box. A closer look at the metallic window mesh reveals Thai traditional dance ornaments reinterpreted as individual brass fingernails which are intricately woven into gleaming curtains, blending cultural elements into every detail.

Celia has proudly led Rosewood Bangkok to win The Commercial Interior Design Association (IIDA) 2019 Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards – Hotels category. The annual Best of Asia Pacific Design Awards seeks to recognise and honour the highest level of creativity and design excellence in interior design as well as interior architecture projects. The accolade acknowledges Celia’s design flair in hospitality and residential work with her trademark of sophistication and layered richness, combining practical functionality to create a unique visual expression and design sensibility.
